5.0 out of five stars Smart little puck, as good as (but different from) Apple TV, July 29, 2011
By Jon Folkers (Silver Spring, MD United States) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Roku two XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics) This little player, about the size of a hockey puck, is exactly what I looked for. It is cheap, easy, and fun. I got it to play Netflix, Prime, and Vimeo, and everything else it does is a nice add on, particularly motion controlled mad Birds. If you are in the market for a Roku 2, I think you may also get this high end model (there are stripped down variants for less money) since it has some more potential, as well as a game controller, an ethernet jack, and a USB port for playing external files. The software interface isn’t slick but everything fast and responsive.

UPDATE: I added a star because this unit has proven itself more stable than it was at launch, caused by recurrent software updates. As well, the machine now has the HBO Go app, which lets you to stream from HBO on demand from a big catalog of movies and TV shows.

How is the Roku two different from the Apple TV (which it resembles, and I also considered)? It is physically alike and has many overlapping features, but here are the major differences as I see them:

BOTH have Netflix Streaming and sports channels like NBA and MLB (subscription obliged for this stuff). Both wired and wireless network potential. Both are tiny, power sipping, unobtrusive little devices that could most likely be implanted in TV hardware.

AppleTV (not the Roku 2!) has tight iTunes integration, as well as iTunes movie rentals, streaming from a local PC/Mac with iTunes installed, and YouTube. AirPlay (stream to the box from your iOS device) is supported and works well and adds to the usability of this device if you have an iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. Now, you may be able to only use the “apps” that are included with the box. The AppleTV remote is made of nice aluminum but relies on line of sight infrared signals. AppleTV requires an HDTV to work and displays up to 720p resolutions.

Roku two (the product being reviewed! not AppleTV!) has a “channel” installer which you may be able to easily manage via a web app on your computer. This system is a bit less polished, but many more open than the AppleTV system. Roku Channel choices include Prime videos, rentals, Vimeo, Hulu Plus, Pandora Radio, and bunch of streaming news and movie services. The Wii like game remote comes with mad Birds and more 2D informal games are promised. The game controller has fitted accelerometers and game friendly buttons, and it works well for this game. This layout could be ideal for Super Nintendo style games, too. I like how it does not require an IR receiver like the Wii remote does. The tiny Roku two box has an IR receiver so you may be able to use a common remote with it, but the included remote uses RF signals and does not need line of sight to the box. Roku two XS can run on pretty much any TV (it will include composite cables) and can display up to 1080p resolutions.

As you may be able to see, these two machines are alike, but not the same. I chose this machine because it worked with an old SDTV, could play Prime videos (lots of kids programming on there, thanks Amazon), and offers a nice, standalone alternative to the Apple ecosystem.

3.0 out of five stars Great device, user experience may be better, August 3, 2011
By Mahesh See all my reviews () This review is from: Roku two XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics) I have been using Roku two XS for some days now and I must say I like the device, but there are quite some hiccups. So 1st the good stuff.

The Box is tiny and the setup is a breeze. I was up and streaming in under five mins.
Netflix, Huluplus, and Pandora worked fine
Streaming in 1080p worked good without buffering (I use Xfinity) and the quality is superb
The Ethernet choice (available only in XS) is useful and the Quality of streaming is far better than wireless

And the not so good stuff:
The Box doesn’t have adequate memory and needs an external micro SD card for more capacity
The device re booted some times for me when switching between channels. I was firstly upset with this as the reboot procedure takes about 3 4 mins. I called support and they asked me to uninstall mad Birds as it takes up big total of space. Did that , then on no re boots. This sucks as Roku two advertises mad Birds big time and the remote is intended for that, but the device isn’t able without extra memory
It’s non sense that I purchase the high end XS variant for Ethernet and HD support and I still have to purchase HDMI cable and Ethernet cable separately!
I primarily bought Roku for streaming International Channels and to my horror I found that majority of the channels don’t work in Roku 2!! seemingly Roku 2′s video format is different to that of Roku 1. Roku support says that the Channel provider needs to fix it and the Channel provider’s support say that Roku needs to fix it!!! So why promote them and make me register for them then??
, many channels have sub channels inside them. Switching from One channel is only possible through menus and there aren’t short cuts. It takes up to five to six button press to switch Channels and it clearly sucks.

Verdict:
If Roku is serious of competing with Apple TV and Content is the differentiator, then Roku needs to pay more attention to the content and ensure it works and make the user experience better.

4.0 out of five stars New Look, New Power, New choice., July 26, 2011
By Jeremy Johnson (Washington State) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Roku two XS 1080p Streaming Player (Electronics) With an upgraded processor and design, it carries most of the same features as the original player in a smaller size; the major changes is the Wii like remote and mad Birds being included with a small selection of games that you may buy from their games store.

My major peeve is the same as the 1st player; the device never powers off. This messes with my auto switcher and I have to unplug the Roku when I am not using it and want to watch something else or play games. Roku’s whole goal with this is so that the unit will generally be able to get updates. With them saying that it consumes little power while idle, I could rather have the choice to power off. I know I could get a better switching system that could correct this, but I do not feel like spending the money on that part of the system now.

I’ve heard some number of complaints of no Optical connections, which based on your setup may be a big hindrance, for me this is not a big issue as I do not use optical. All else fails, you may be able to generally get a HDMI to Optical converter box. This can be a big reason that many of customers stay with the original Roku or go for another system all together.

The Roku two not supports dual band Wireless N, it only works in the 2.4 Ghz range.

The XS model is the only one that comes with an Ethernet port, if you have poor or no wireless you will have to get this variant to be able to connect. For the extra $30 dollars this player costs you, it will include the spiffy remote, Free Game, Ethernet port and USB choice. If you have any hesitation, choose the XS.

They’ve moved the USB connection to the side of the device, but you will have to wait till September for the full USB working to be released in a new firmware update. Till then you will have restricted compatibility and functionality.

They’ve opted for a Micro SD card to increase device memory when you need more space for games or more channels. I know it is smaller in size, but I could liked to see a regular SD card slot so I do not have to purchase special memory for this particular device. Just personal preference and does not hinder the usability.

I would not be surprised if at some point their next system was an all out gaming console. With the new concentrate on games, it just opens up the possibility.

Overall, I am a informal TV watcher, I may watch an hour a day or less and it fits my needs. If you do not care about the games and a bit of added performance your original Roku will work just good for you. Otherwise, if you care about size, new technology, and the choice for basic games. It is worth the upgrade.

5.0 out of five stars Apple TV Good Now, possible to be Great, October 15, 2010
By Just Another Geek “vikast” (Simi Valley, CA, USA) See all my reviews This review is from: Apple TV MC572LL/A (NEWEST VERSION) (Electronics) I’m not an Apple Afficianodo. I do not wear jeans and black turtlenecks in reverence to Steve Jobs. I do not hang out at the Apple Store and covet becoming a “genius”; but, I have to give credit where credit is due. The last not many merchandise Apple has brought out the iPod, iPhone, iPad have been unbelievable and changed the buyer electronics and media / software landscape. Apple TV is located to do the same, but it’ll take many more time to completely realize the possible of this device.

Apple TV effectively lets you to stream whatever is on your iTunes to your TV and home theater system. Moreover, it has fitted support for Netflix, You Tube and some other internet established media content providers. The picture quality and performance for these services are worth the price of admission. There’s important possible to advance the platform just give it many time.

System Overview: My Apple TV is plugged into a 60 inch Samsung 1080p LED HDTV via HDMI (video) and a Yamaha Home Theater Receiver via Toslink optical cable (audio). I have AT&T Uverse with their 802.11g Residential Gateway (combination of DSL modem and wireless router) with their Elite DSL service (6 MB per second). ITunes runs on a Dell Desktop with 4GB of memory, Intel Core two Duo processor and 500 GB Hard Drive operating on Windows Vista (64 bit) and secured with Norton 360 (firewall, antivirus, etc.). The network handles the Desktop, two iPhones, a Blackberry, an iPad, the Apple TV, four Laptops, a wireless Printer and a networked wired printer. The Computer / Residential Gateway are in the Den and the TV / Home Theater / Apple TV are in the family room. The two rooms are about 100 feet separately and are separated by five walls.

Set Up: Easy as pie. It took five minutes to plug in the HDMI cable, the optical cable, the power outlet , then adding it to the wireless network. Sharing iTunes from my desktop to Apple TV took another 20 minutes, since I had to download the new variant of iTunes and restart my computer and Apple TV. Apple really makes it simple I did not have to make any modifications to my firewall settings to share iTunes on the desktop with Apple TV. I also downloaded the Apple Remote on my iPhone and iPad, which took another five minutes.

User Interface: Apple’s secret sauce is the simplicity of their merchandise. Apple TV is no different. The menu is simple Movies, TV, Internet, Computer and Settings. Movies and TV are for renting content directly from iTunes inside Apple TV. Internet gives you access to Netflix, You Tube, etc. Computer gives you access to iTunes on your computer. Settings lets you to change the different Apple TV alternatives. The remote control is Apple’s common model of minimalist efficiency, with a menu button, a play / pause button and an iPod like controller. The supplied remote works well with Apple TV, but is a bit cumbersome when one has to enter data (e.G., e mail addresses, search on YouTube or Netflix). A much better solution is downloading Apple Remote on your iPhone or iPad. It just turns the iPhone or iPad into a big touch pad that lets you to use gestures to control the Apple TV (e.G., swipe left, swipe right, double click, etc.). Moreover, it automatically gives a keyboard when one is asked for text input (e.G., for search). Apple remote is free on the App Store.

Netflix Streaming / Video Quality: Setting up Netflix was fast just just enter your e mail address / password and you are prepared to go. I watched many TV from BBC, a foreign flick and Iron Man. Each program loaded quickly less than 30 seconds. Picture quality was good to great, based on the source material. Picture quality was comparable to DVD for SD material(perhaps somewhat better), but somewhat less sharp than upconverted DVD or blue ray. HD Programming looked like the HD on demand programming through uVerse. There was enough of a buffer that there was no jittering, pixelation or stuttering on the streaming to the TV. Sound quality on the stream was good I do not think they stream in 5.1, so the video stream does not leverage the subwoofer. Considering that I am running a heavily taxed wireless system on 802.11g with a 100 foot distance between Apple TV and the Gateway, the picture quality and streaming performance are remarkable. Having this quality of Netflix compatibility is worth the price of admission by itself.

ITunes Streaming: I streamed many music from my Playlists from the Computer. Sound quality is good, but not great. My Yamaha CD Player sounds better, but it can only hold five cds. Having access to my complete library is useful, so you lose sound quality but get convenience. ITunes streams not only the music, but also the cover art. After some minutes, Apple TV switches into screensaver mode and starts transmitting pictures to the TV with the music. I also streamed many videos from my computer and the streaming was again flawless. One of the issues with Apple TV is that it only supports the Apple video standards, i.E., MP4. I had many DIVX files that I transformed over to MP4 by using DVD Fab and imported them into iTunes. If you have a library of AVI, Divx, Xvid, etc., this will require conversion of those files to stream from your computer.

ITunes from inside Apple TV: there’s access to an iTunes store inside Apple TV also. They have a different pricing structure, in that TV shows and movies are available for rent only. They have a restricted number of titles now mainly BBC, ABC (since Steve Jobs sits on their Board) and Fox. CBS and NBC aren’t on Apple TV. Movie selection is decent they have all the new movies. The Apple TV selection may be easily increased by just downloading the content you want from iTunes on your desktop , then streaming it to Apple TV.

YouTube Streaming: amazingly good. The HQ / HD You Tube pieces look remarkably crisp on the TV. The older content that was meant to watch on a small window on your computer looked a little pixelated, but satisfactory.

Apple has built a great platform with many of possible. With what is available now Apple TV is a pretty remarkable value at $99. It’s worth it just for the Netflix streaming and integration with iTunes. Since Apple TV is really built on the same hardware (at least the processing chip) as the iPhone and iPad and has the same operating system, I would not be surprised if there are “apps” that will sooner or later make it to Apple TV to more improve Apple TV (e.G., ABC Streaming, Games, on Demand, etc.). There’s supposed to be an upgrade to the operating system with a new variant of Airplay that comes out in November, 2010. This will let you to stream from an iPad or iPod to the Apple TV also.

I looked at other streaming devices (e.G., Roku, using my Panasonic Blue Ray for Netflix, etc.) and none of them had the simplicity and reliabilty that the Apple TV offers. The Wi Fi “stick” for my Blue Ray player is $80 anyway and the Netflix integration is not anywhere almost as robust as Apple TV. UVerse also has music and picture streaming fitted using Microsoft Media Center but, it obliged many network configuration and it crashes quite frequently. I did not buy a Roku, but a friend of mine has had some issues with streaming performance. At under $100, the Apple TV is competitively priced with other streaming alternatives. Now just bring on the “apps”.

Update on 4/1/11:

I’ve had the Apple TV for some months now and I still really like it. Apple has presented Airplay, which is worth mentioning as it has possible to be a gamechanger technology. Moreover, there was important activity on the “jailbreaking” front for the Apple TV.

Airplay is Apple’s system of transmitting video / audio wirelessly between matched devices. Apple TV, the iPhone and iPad are all Airplay matched. This has proven to be especially useful feature as I can stream videos from my iPad to the Apple TV and have them appear on my TV. As an example, I may have a digital copy of a movie on my iPad (perhaps bought through iTunes or came with a DVD purchase). Through Airplay, I can transmit the movie directly from my iPad to the Apple TV and watch the movie on my TV. Likewise, if a friend has an iPhone and we want to listen to their new music selection, we can stream their music from their iPhone straight to my stereo system through Airplay. The real gamechanger for Airplay is streaming video from websites onto my Apple TV so I can watch them on my TV. As an example, I may be on the TED web site and they have a video from a TED conference. I can stream the video straight to my Apple TV and watch the video on my TV’s 60 inch screen instead of the iPad’s ten inch screen. Some number of websites have already incorporated Airplay compatibility into their videos, like CNN and TED. I think Airplay is going to have an interesting adoption cycle conventional media businesses (e.G., TV Networks) most likely will not support Airplay since it goes against their business model. Other websites that rely on video for traffic (e.G., adult sites, news sites, blogs, etc.) will most likely adopt Airplay to get more traction with buyers.

According to Wikipedia, jailbreaking mentions “a procedure that lets devices running Apple’s iOS operating system to get full access to unlock all features of the said operating system, thus removing restrictions forced by Apple”. Once jailbroken, iOS users are able to load and run applications that aren’t available on the App Store. Jailbreaking a device isn’t illegal, much to Apple’s chagrin; but, it may void one’s warranty. I am not going into how to jailbreak and Apple TV just google “jailbreak Apple TV” for. Read more ›

4.0 out of five stars a great box for to get media from point A, B and C to your TV, October 2, 2010
By S. Miller (DC) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) This review is from: Apple TV MC572LL/A (NEWEST VERSION) (Electronics) I looked forward to this product since it was declared early last month. I am happy I pulled the trigger and bought it when it became available. For $99 it gives most of the functionality I payed microsoft $50 a year for. I have become less reliant on the XBOX as a game machine, and more as a Netflix/Media Streamer since my family has grown, and not having to pay for XBOX Live was one of the driving reasons behind this buy. The reason I say “most of the functionality” is caused by it not having the codec support that the XBOX360 comes with out of the box. I have had no issues with playback of mp4 or m4v files, and I am happy with that, but it lacks support for WMV and AVI (as far as I have experienced). This is not exactly a deal breaker since I can re encode any content to supported codecs with handbrake and use iTunes to take care of my video library.

The UI is slick, the setup was somewhat easy (but could have been easier with keyboard support) and the capability to control music from my laptop and desktop is great (through iTunes via the now restricted “airplay” functionality).

I’m really happy with the YouTube, Flickr and Netflix support. They’re by far the best I have seen from a media center, but I can see certain parts being a ache if you use the included remote (there is no keyboard to speak of, and scrolling through letter to spell things out is a hassle). The remote app on iOS devices more than makes up for the lack of a keyboard since it gives added functionality (such as alpha numeric input, fast seeking and library browsing). I look forward to video support with airplay and will update this review once I get to play with that (in November?).

One last thing it is calm. The thing barely makes a peep.

5.0 out of five stars Great Improvement over previous Linksys N, April 15, 2011
By josh u (south florida) See all my reviews This review is from: Linksys E2500 Advanced concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router (Electronics) Setting up this router using the included software (Cisco Connect) was a breeze. Inside 20 minutes, I installed Cisco Connect, named my network, set my password, secured my network and connected my desktop (hardwired), wireless laptop and bluray player. Setup was a breeze.

The E2500 replaces my Refurbished Linksys WRT160N, which stopped working less than a year after I bought it. That was hard to use from the start(btw, dd wrt did not fix the problem).

The E2500 is lightening fast. I tested streaming video and it worked great wirelessly on my laptop and bluray player all over my house. I recommend using the Easy Setup Key via Cisco Connect to connect a laptop, it was a breeze to use. You may be able to have a Guest Network that has a separate password and does not let guests access to certain files on the network. This is easy to setup via Cisco Connect and easy to turn off or on. Using Cisco Connect can replace going to the web based router setup browser page for all of the basic setup needs and more.

The unit runs hot, but dint burn a whole in surface its on. There aren’t lights on the face of the router like previous model designs. The E2500 looks much sleeker.

So the router is FAST, was EASY TO INSTALL and I had three devices CONNECTED inside 20 MINUTES.

5.0 out of five stars Excellent Choice, April 22, 2011
By David See all my reviews () This review is from: Linksys E2500 Advanced concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router (Electronics) Let me begin by pointing out that I just bought this yesterday, so I can not comment on the long term dependability of this router. That being said, I had to post a review given that I am pleased with the procedure far. I will update this as time progresses.

This router was a substitute for my old WRT54G that served me well for about four years, but acted up (dropping signal, slow connections, low range, etc). So I decided to buy this model (E2500 as a replacement).

The whole time before this new router arrived I dreaded the prospect of setting it up given my experience with my old WRT54G router. Once it arrived, I followed the information in the packaging , then put the CD into my macbook to launch the installer. The installer itself simply involved pressing some buttons , then it did the rest! My network was up and running in about five minutes with the installer doing all the work for me.

What I did notice was that the installer produced a guest account that was not protected like the major one. This worried me, so I logged in to the advanced settings using the router’s IP address at 192.168.1.1 using my browser (you should preferably use the computer you used to setup the network because it is already connected to the network). I think the default is to leave the login name blank and to use your default network password as your login password. Once I was inside, I disabled the guest account, but it turned out that there was a password in place it is just that it is browser based seemingly (your guests will be able to login to the network itself, but will only be able to access the internet by typing in the password in the browser). If you want to leave the guest access available, simply write down the default password that shows up on screen or setup a new one. I also changed the default password used to login to my router in here also (under the “administration tab”). To clarify, the 192.168.1.1 address brings up a menu where you may be able to change your router’s default settings to your liking. I think this was a criticism of the “easy” setup that it does not let you customize your router. I really see this procedure in reverse the “easy” setup configures your router to work properly given your situation. Once it is setup, you may be able to change whatever parts of the setup that you want to. In my case, I only changed the router password, guest access, and my network key.

Once it was setup to my plans, I proceeded to update all of my computers with the new network key. I also connected all my other devices behind the router (there are four slots).

In regards to performance my macbook that was not to get a signal with my old router works perfectly now. That being said, it is a new macbook, so it is able to use the “n” band. My sister has a 2006 white macbook next door that only utilizes G though she’s having no problems either.

Overall, I am happy i made this buy and greatly recommend it to others. I do not own any other n routers, so I can not comment on how much “better” this is relative to others. I can only say that I am happy I made the right choice with this one. I will be sure to update this review should issues with dependability surface.

EDIT: You really do not have to login to the router’s IP address to access the features I mentioned above. You may be able to simply use the “Cisco Connect” software that came with it. The only issue I can think of is that if you use this software, you may be able to only run it through the computer you setup the router with. The IP technique above will work from any computer connected to the network (after logging in with password). The con of the IP technique is that it is not as “user friendly” as the “Cisco Connect” technique. Finally, you may want to weigh the pros and cons yourself and choose which is best for managing your router. I will be picking the “Cisco Connect” technique meanwhile just because it is easier to use, but I will go back to the IP technique should anything happen to my computer (where the Cisco software is installed).

4.0 out of five stars Nice upgrade from WRT54G2, April 22, 2011
By A. Bloom “AB” (US) See all my reviews
(REAL NAME) () This review is from: Linksys E2500 Advanced concurrent Dual Band Wireless N Router (Electronics) Did broad speed and ping tests certainly faster and more stable with this router. I still lose Mbps through walls in my apartment. With my older WRT54G2 router in same room I could not get alike speeds over wi fi as hardwired, this router does it with ease. Set up was super easy took me less than five min. In general, the router is great for what you pay for, if you have never owned the N model it is an alternative.

Pros:

Speedy, leaves WRT54G2 way behind

Easier Set up interface over last Linksys model

New matte surface, looks nice beside the PS3 slim

No annoying flashing lights

Friendly with Docsis three modem

No unexpected signal drops ( note: need more time to completely evaluate}

Cons:

Speed somewhat degrades through walls not as serious as before with the G model.
